I’m Ngoh Rodney Amah - Forex Trader & founder of Confluence Trading Lab. I started trading during COVID, made all the classic mistakes, and learned the hard way. But everything changed when I dove into quantitative trading and system design. Now, CTL exists to help you skip the confusion and trade with confidence.

Hi everyone, my name is Ngoh Rodney Amah, and I’m a Foreign Exchange Trader. I’d like to warmly welcome you to Confluence Trading Lab. Before I share the vision behind this space, let me take you on a journey — my trading journey — which ultimately gave birth to it.

How It All Began

When I left Cameroon in 2019 to pursue my Bachelor’s degree at Ashesi University in Ghana, I had no idea I would one day become a forex trader. But that changed in 2020 — during the last semester of my first year — when we were abruptly informed that schools would be closing due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Like many others, I stumbled into trading by curiosity. I started reading articles and watching YouTube videos, driven by simple but persistent questions: How do traders know when the market will go up or down? What tools do they use? How do they actually make money from this?

I consumed so much content that I could often tell who made a trading video just by hearing the voice or style. But all those 5 to 20-minute video clips, as informative as they were, didn’t instantly translate into results. If anything, they just hinted that there was more to trading than met the eye.

My First Steps

During the lockdown, I decided to invest part of my stipend into an online forex training program. It was run over WhatsApp at 7 PM GMT, with the instructor sharing a series of messages and charts that we read, discussed, and asked questions about. After about a month of sessions, we "graduated", received a certificate, and joined a larger Telegram group with more advanced traders for mentorship.

However, I quickly grew impatient. I felt I wasn’t learning much and left the group. I began paper trading with the knowledge I had acquired, but it felt dull — profits weren’t real, losses didn’t hurt. So I rushed into live trading without a solid system or plan.

Beginner’s luck smiled on me. I made a quick $19, then another $10, and before long I had grown my small account by nearly 50%. It felt like I had cracked the code — until I hadn't. Losses came, profits vanished, and eventually, I blew the account.

This pattern repeated itself through most of that year, and the next. I kept searching. Watching more videos. Digging deeper. Hoping to find something — though I wasn’t sure what.

The Search for Structure

Eventually, I came across proprietary trading and got funded by MyForexFunds (they’re no longer in business). I traded a $10K verified account and made about 3.5% profit. It was my first real test with capital, and for once, I felt like I was doing something right.

But I later lost that account.

Still searching, I discovered a new mentorship program focused on “Precision-Based Trading.” I was in my third year of university, and I managed to pull together $500 to pay for it, convinced it would finally give me the breakthrough I needed.

Unfortunately, it turned out to be one of the worst investments I’ve made. The course was poorly delivered — some videos had no sound, many lacked explanation, and the instructor was largely unresponsive. Once again, I found myself alone. Still, I tried to make it work. I practiced what I could, but most times the results were inconsistent — and I didn’t understand why. When I sought clarity, I got silence.

The Turning Point

My fourth year at university was the most intense yet — filled with tight academic deadlines and continued searching. Eventually, I graduated and enrolled in a Master’s program at Carnegie Mellon University Africa (CMU-Africa).

That’s when everything changed.

In my first semester, I took a course titled Quantitative Financial Analytics and Algorithmic Trading (QFAAT). It completely transformed the way I started to approach trading. I paused everything else to focus on it. I could finally ask questions — and get real answers. For the first time, I began to understand how markets work, how strategies are tested, and how to write code to automate trading systems.

After that, I returned to the methods I had left behind and began integrating what I had learned. I refined my approach while completing my degree, and the results were impressive. It was then I realized:

This is what I want to focus on. I’ve been at it for over five years. And maybe, just maybe, I can help others too.

Why Confluence Trading Lab Exists

Confluence Trading Lab was born out of that realization — and the desire to help other traders like me navigate this complex, often lonely journey. My hope is to create a space where:

  • You will learn the art and science of forex trading
  • You will understand how to build trading systems that actually work
  • You will develop a solid trading mindset rooted in discipline and data
  • You will gain a clear understanding of risk and how to manage it
This will be a place where you get more answers than questions, where you're supported, where you feel like you truly belong to a community of learners, thinkers, and builders — people who are not afraid to fail, reflect, and try again.
